See, our society is materialism based. A person is judged on what they can buy, how many cars they have, how many women they fuck, who's got the biggest TV etc....unfortunately 99% of society represents these mindless morons. As a result, what you get is a contradiction with religion. People become material based, and thus when they are asked to believe in something that isn't tangible on this world they simply cannot since they lead their lives around the tangible. Science is much easier for them to follow since they can touch, feel and taste the results. They can't get the same from religion.
