I'm sure there are people who would refuse to reply in French - there are
ignorant assholes no matter where you are. What you have to remember though is
that in Ontario French is not exactly commonly spoken! And the amount of
French language instruction most people receive in school is totally
inadequate to carry on a conversation even if they remember it! unless they
have been through a French immersion program. It is uncommon to find a fluent
French speaking here whereas in Quebec, the majority (again unless you happen
to be out in the boondocks) ARE bilingual, since they require it if they
expect to get anywhere in life. As for Burger King (sigh)... all I can say is
that if the people who were treated in that fashion did not have the guts to
speak out, then YOU as a witness to the incident should have! It should have
been brough to the Manager;s attention, and furthermore, had it been me I
would have contacted head office and lodged a formal complaint. People
working in a burger are expected to be polite to everyone whether they are
French, Chinese, German speaking tourists - who knows. the person should have
been fired and you should have gotten involved in it if it meant so much to
you.
